Shopify vs WooCommerce: Who Wins the AI Commerce Race?
Shopify just shipped native AI agent support. WooCommerce didn't. Here's what that actually means for your business.
The Uncomfortable Truth
Let's not dance around it: Shopify has a significant head start in the AI commerce race.
They co-built the Universal Commerce Protocol with Google. They launched Agentic Storefronts. When someone asks Google Gemini to find a product, Shopify stores show up. They can complete the entire purchase without leaving the AI interface.
WooCommerce? Still waiting.
This isn't about which platform is "better" in general. It's about which platform is ready for how shopping is changing right now.
The Score Card

I wish I could tell you it's closer. It's not.
Why Shopify Has the Advantage
1. They Built the Protocol
Google didn't build UCP alone—they partnered with Shopify. This means Shopify's infrastructure is designed from the ground up to work with Google's AI agents.
2. Automatic Everything
Shopify stores get structured data, product feeds, and AI-readable catalogs by default. WooCommerce requires plugins, configuration, and ongoing maintenance.
3. First-Mover Benefits
When someone asks an AI to find products, and only Shopify stores can complete the purchase, guess who gets recommended?
The AI agent's job is to complete the user's task. If your store can't be transacted with, you're not completing the task. You don't get recommended.
Why WooCommerce Still Has a Place
Before you rage-migrate to Shopify, consider:
Ownership
WooCommerce is open-source. You own your data, your code, your everything. Shopify is a rental. One policy change, one account suspension, and you're rebuilding from scratch.
Flexibility
Complex product configurators, unusual checkout flows, heavy customization—WooCommerce can handle it. Shopify has limits.
Cost at Scale
Shopify takes a percentage of every sale (plus payment processing). At high volumes, WooCommerce can be significantly cheaper.
ACP is Coming
OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol is rolling out to WooCommerce. When it launches, WooCommerce stores will be able to sell through ChatGPT. This partially closes the gap.
What Should You Do?
If you're starting fresh
Shopify is the pragmatic choice for AI commerce in 2026. The convenience of native UCP support is hard to argue against unless you have specific needs WooCommerce solves better.
If you're on WooCommerce
Don't migrate in a panic. Optimize what you can control now (schema, feeds, policies), watch for ACP plugins, and evaluate in 6 months. The gap will narrow.
If you're on Shopify
Enable Agentic Storefronts if you haven't already. You have a temporary advantage—use it while you can. Competitors will catch up eventually.
The Bigger Picture
Here's what most people miss: this isn't really about Shopify vs WooCommerce.
It's about whether your store can participate in AI-driven commerce at all.
Shopify stores are ready. WooCommerce stores can be ready with work. Stores that do nothing? They're invisible to a growing segment of shoppers.
The platform you choose matters. But what matters more is whether you're taking action at all.
