Understanding AI Commerce Fee Structures
ChatGPT Shopping & Instant Checkout Fees
When a customer completes a purchase through ChatGPT's Instant Checkout feature, OpenAI charges a 4% platform fee on the order value. This is on top of the standard Stripe processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. The combined effective rate of roughly 7.3% makes it one of the more expensive AI commerce channels.
This applies to all merchants using the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) for ChatGPT checkout — whether you're on Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or any other platform.
Google AI Mode Shopping Fees
Google's AI Mode currently charges no platform fee for product discovery and shopping through its AI-powered search. You only pay your existing payment processor's standard fees (typically 2.9% + $0.30 for Stripe).
Google uses the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to surface products. This is subject to change as Google's AI Mode monetization strategy evolves, but for now it represents the lowest-cost AI shopping channel.
How to Think About AI Commerce Fees
The key question isn't which channel has the lowest fees — it's which channel delivers the best return on investment. Consider these factors:
- •Customer acquisition cost: If you're paying $15+ per acquisition through Google Ads, a 4% fee on a $75 order ($3) is a bargain.
- •Incremental revenue: AI shopping channels bring new customers who wouldn't have found your store. The fee is on revenue you wouldn't otherwise have.
- •Conversion rate: AI-referred shoppers arrive with higher purchase intent. ChatGPT's seamless Instant Checkout may convert significantly better than a redirect to your website.
- •Multi-channel strategy: Most merchants should be present on both ChatGPT Shopping and Google AI Mode, not choose one exclusively.
